2023年3月26日、F-15EXイーグルIIの試験行っている基地でもあるネリス空軍基地（Nellis Air Force Base）において、第40空輸飛行隊（The 40th Airlift Squadron）と第1機甲師団（1st Armored Division）による合同演習（Joint exercises）、オペレーション・ナイト・キング（Operation Night King）が実施されました。
C-130JからM1A2への給油だけでなく、米国空軍による陸軍機甲部隊への実戦的な補給訓練です。
主役は、米国空軍の輸送機C-130J Super Hercules（スーパー・ハーキュリーズ）と米国陸軍の主力戦車M1A2 Abrams（エイブラムス）です。
ここでは、主に米国空軍のネリス空軍基地（Nellis Air Force Base）のWebサイトの情報からこの合同演習（輸送機と戦車の合同演習）について説明します。
オペレーション・ナイト・キング（Operation Night King）のポイント
この演習の見た目での大きなポイントは次の2つだと考えています。
- C-130Jによる（基地の滑走路ではなく）道路や乾燥した固定の様なエリアへの離着陸
- C-130Jから直接主力戦車M1A2エイブラムスに給油

C-130JとM1A2の大きさは、人と比べるとイメージしやすいと思います。

この演習においてC-130Jが訓練目的を列挙してみると、
- （基地の滑走路ではなく）道路や乾燥した固定の様なエリアへの離着陸
- M1A2えの燃料補給のための準備と撤収（給油以外のこと）
- M1A2への燃料補給（十分な燃料をできるだけ短時間で）
- 給油しながら燃料以外の物資の補給
- 地上部隊からの負傷者の収容
この演習においてM1A2が訓練することは、
- 輸送機からの直接給油をうけること
- M1A2の機動を最小限にするための補給エリア
- 準備・撤収を含めできるだけ短時間で給油を終えること
双方に関連することとしては、
- C-130Jが離着陸しやすいことと、M1A2の部隊として補給を受けやすいことのバランス
があると考えています。
この合同演習の成果として、
- 陸軍と空軍の部隊が、お互いのミッション（任務）に慣れること
- お互いの部隊や任務の枠を超えた戦術的なコミュニケーションの理解を深めること
が期待されたようです。
演習では、
- M1A2エイブラムス８両への燃料補給
- ロビンソン・燃料キット（the Robinson fuel kit）を使用して、同時に2両のM1A2に対し、C-130Jエンジン稼働状態で1時間以内で燃料補給
を行いました。

戦車の車体上面までは、落ちれば危ない高さですし、足場も狭いので注意が必要です。
